His Assignment

On 28 May 1999, his unit was tasked to capture Point 4268 in Jubar Ridge located on the western side of the Batalik sector, the second highest battlefield in the world after Siachen

His Fearlessness

The unit launched the assault on 29 May 1999 at 04:00 hrs. Major Saravanan killed two enemy soldiers by firing a rocket launcher and was wounded in the stomach by shrapnel

His Perseverance

He charged through a hail of bullets and killed two more enemy soldiers. He was the first to reach the top; but received a bullet injury in the head at 06.30 hrs. and fell into a ravine

His Inspiration

His unit 1 Bihar took an oath to capture Point 4268, which they did by 6 July. The entire Jubar ridge was cleared by 8 July 1999. His body could be recovered, 37 days after his death, following a bitter fight.

Major M Saravanan was the Company Commander of one of the companies of 1 Bihar launched in the battalion attack on Point 4268 In the Batalik sector during "Operation Vijay” While moving forward to eliminate the last position held by the enemy, Major Saravanan was fired upon by the enemy with a heavy volume of small arms fire. Unmindful of the enemy fire, he crawled forward to destroy the last remaining enemy position and before being fatally hit by an enemy bullet, killed two enemy soldiers. Major M Saravanan displayed exceptional bravery, valour and exemplary leadership, fighting from front, destroying two enemy sagars and killing few enemy soldiers before laying his life for the motherland and in the process eliminating an important enemy position.

Son of an army officer Lt Col Adi Mariappan and Amrithavalli Mariyappan, Major Saravanan had made up his mind to follow in the footsteps of his father since his childhood.

Major Saravanan Memorial

Built in the center of a 4 road junction on Williams Road; the Major Saravanan Memorial is at a walking distance from the headquarters of the 117 Infantry Battalion (TA) The Guards.

The Bihar Regiment (Indian Army)

Bihar Regiment is probable the only Army Infantry Unit to have an aircraft carrier assigned to it. Aircraft Carrier INS Vikramaditya, is affiliated to The Bihar Regiment, a highly decorated and battle hardened Infantry Unit of the Indian Army and the No. 6 Squadron of the Indian Air Force that specializes in maritime strike operations and operates the Jaguar fighter aircraft.

The Bihar Regiment Centre

The Bihar Regiment Centre raised on 01 November 1945 is located at Danapur. The First Indian Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel (Later Brigadier) Hardayal Singh Randhawa took over the command of the Centre in November 1947. The Regiment has 20 regular battalions, four affiliated Rashtriya Rifles battalions and two Territorial Army battalions.
